Richard Milhous Nixon or used to be called Richard Nixon is the 37th President of USA (1969 to 1974). In governing US, he had already intoxicated by power. He took all ways to maintain his presidency. Fraudulent actions done by President Nixon wafted by two reporters of The Washington Post. Those scandal known as Watergate Scandal and became the greatest political scandal in US history along 20th century. It consisted of divisions, efforts to cover up close, the funds for bribery, deception, black list, illegal recording, etc. It brought Nixon on the verge of impeachment. US Attorney General was not possible to close those criminal action. American political elites tried to avoid the occurrence of impeachment against him. Compromise that taken at that time, Nixon was asked to  resign from his position. Finally, he resigned from his position as US President on August 8th, 1974 during the impeachment process going on, so it had not reached yet to the decision of the impeachment process.

I took those quote because it is so relevant with the sixth weekly topic, Congress: Decision Making Process. Impeachment is one of its subtopic. It itself means a formal indictment or accusation by legislative to state officials. It focusses on the process and do not necessarily end with a stop or decrease the President or state officials from office. Based on US Article of Constitution, the subjects of impeachment are President, Vice President and all other civil officers of the US. Officials can be impeached for treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

In my opinion, the existence of impeachment is quite important for all countries. Why? It is needed to control the behaviors of state officials. If the officials do something that harm or deface the state dignity, they can be impeached. If impeachment does not exist, maybe the officials can do everything without being fear to be dropped from their positions.

Until now, impeachment has not happened yet in Indonesia. According to Mahfud MD, Chairman of Constitutional Court in Indonesia, impeachment is not good for development of democracy in Indonesia (, accessed on May 27th, 2012). Impeachment effort itself is still quite difficult to do. Because, until now, there is no constitutional reason that can be the basis to dismiss the president.
